Power Play (1994)

Add comment April 28th, 2008

Power play was directed by the unfamiliar director Rocky Lane and released in 1994. The cast and director are very unfamiliar but, the acting is not perfect but a decent story makes up for it. The main role is being played by Marietta DePrima, even though she is not well known she still got some acceptable acting skills. Other actors from the film are Ken Olandt, Olivia Palenstein and Ryan Walter. Something special with this movie is the length of it the movie only lasts for 62 minutes. This is very rare when it comes to movies. The movie was filmed in Alabama but I am not sure exactly where in Alabama.

The story of the movie is pretty good even though the movie is so short. The movies moral is that some things are more important then money. The movie is a mixture of drama and romance and it offers some good scenes. Some will make you laugh and if you are a sensitive guy, some will probably also make you cry. It a good movie and worth 60 minutes of your time and even though the cast and the director is not very well known the movie still offers some quality moments.

Death Ship recorded on Dauphin Island Alabama

Death Ship (1980)

This is a low budget horror movie recorded in Alabama. The movie is about a dark and scary ghost ship which appears from the fog, and the ship was actually a Nazi torture ship before. The movie was mostly filmed in Dauphin Island, Alabama, USA however you will also see some scenes in Canada and even Mexico. Director Rakoff made this movie very well even though he didn’t have a high budget for it in the first place. The movie however got a weak background story but good and creepy scenes. You will for example never know what actually happen to the ship and why people never saw it before now and what happen to all the crew. The questions about these kind of things goes on and on, and there is really no good answers for them. However, the movie got many scary and creepy scenes that will make you jump in your chair and the more you get into the movie the scarier it gets.

The movie was banned in Finland and Norway, probably because some of the extreme scenes in the movie. Death Ship also features very scary music and it gives a good environment to the movie. The “stars” in the film are George Kennedy, Richard Crenna and Nick Mancuso. These actors are not very familiar but you font need superstars to make a good movie. So for all of you guys out there who like horror movies which will make you jump in your seat, than this is a must watch.

Soul of the Game (1995)

Soul of the Game was directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan. The story was however made by Gary Hoffman and teleplay by David Himmelstein. The film was released in 1996 on 20 April and it was a huge success in the US. The movie was only filmed in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Soul of the Game was also nominated by Image awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Television Movie or Mini-Series Delroy Lindo, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Television Movie or Mini-Series Blair Underwood and Outstanding Television Movie or Mini-Series.

The cast of the movie is pretty good we have actors like Delroy Lindo, Mykelti Williamson, Edward Herrmann and Blair Underwood. A perfect cast for this movie. The story is about the true story of the friendship between three of the greatest Negro League Players of all time (Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige, and Josh Gibson) and how things changed when Robinson was chosen to break the color barrier in the Major Leagues.

I like the story very much and the film offers fun, exciting and sad scenes with a very good screenplay. The movies also don’t makes much commercial for baseball like most other baseball movies do and that is one of the reasons this movie is something special compared to all the other baseball movies out there.

George Wallace: Settin’ the Woods on Fire (2000)

George Wallace: Settin’ the Woods on Fire was directed by award winning Daniel McCabe and award winning Paul Stekler. The documentary was released in 2000 and was a good success all over the world. The documentary won 4 awards and was nominated for 2. The documentary won the Video Source Award and Special Jury Prize in 2000 and the Golden Gate Award and WGA Award in 2001. The cast is however totally unfamiliar to me except for Randy Quaid who plays himself / narrator in the documentary.

The documentary is about the Alabama Governor and president candidate George Wallace. Many people still believes that he was the American version of Hitler, the people who still think that has to see this documentary. You can almost not believe what you hear when people (also black civil rights leaders) have to say about him. And then ask yourself how did this man become a lightning rod for controversy and how did he chatter himself into doing what he did? All in all it is worth seeing this documentary, and the conclusion is that things aren’t always like they seem or like we want them to be. A good and educational documentary indeed.

Love Liza (2002)

Love Liza is a comedy / drama movie directed by award winning Todd Louiso. The film was released in late 2002 but I am not exactly sure which date. The movie was filmed in Mobile Alabama and they manage to show some landscape here but far from much. The movie won 2 awards and got 3 nominations. The 2 awards were from Chlotrudis Award and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for best supporting actor Jack Kehler and Gordy Hoffman. The cast is however not familiar but not unfamiliar either. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kathy Bates and J.D. Walsh are some of the actors you will see in this movie. Philip Seymour Hoffman is an excellent actor and he really brings this movie to life. He got a Oscar for best leading role in Capote in 2005 and here he shows what made him get this far and get his Oscar.

The story is about Wilson Joel. His wife just killed himself and we follow Wilson Joel on his journey to get new happiness in his life. His mother-in-law is there for him, but her sympathies turn quickly. After a while Wilson gets into the drug business but before its to late his life will shine again.

The Insider was directed by the award winning director Michael Mann and released on 28 October 1999. The movie was filmed several places but most importantly in Alabama. The movie won 21 awards and was nominated for 7 Oscars and got another 31 nominations. The was nominated Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role Russell Crowe, Best Cinematography Dante Spinotti, best Director Michael Mann, Best Editing William Goldenberg, Paul Rubell and David Rosenbloom. These are just some of the 7 Oscar nominations and the 21 award wins the film got. The cast in this movie is excellent we have Al Pacino in the main role, Russell Crowe, Christopher Plummer, Diane Venora, Philip Baker Hall and many more Hollywood super actors. The film was a huge success and the director has only made quality films. The story and the actors are simply perfect.

The story is based on a true story about a CBS 60 Minutes-episode in 1994 on malpractices in the tobacco industry that was not aired because CBS parent company Westinghouse objected. Pacino plays the 60 Minutes Producer. Pacino really offers quality to this movie filmed in Alabama together with Russell Crowe, this is simply a movie you have to watch.

Big Fish was directed by Oscar Nominated Tim Burton. Tim Burton has only made high quality movies he has for example directed the classics Beetle Juice, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and many more. Big Fish was also a huge success and it was released on 10 December 2003 in USA. The filming of the movie actually took place in Alabama and I think most people from Alabama are very proud for that. The movie got nominated for Oscar and also for another 32 prizes. The cast in the film is great and the acting is at its best. Ewan McGregor best known from the latest Star Wars movies (Obi Wan) has the lead role as Ed Bloom – Younger while Albert Finney plays the role as his dying father Ed Bloom – Older. There are also many other great actors in this film just watch it and I am sure you will see more familiar faces.
